Train & Bike

NEW: Book bike reservations online for routes to Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Czechia, Poland, Italy (see details) and Denmark.

Simply select "Bike" in the European Train Planner.

More countries and routes will be added soon.

Whether you're planning a cycling holiday across Europe or simply want to have your own bike with you at your destination, many European trains allow bicycles on board. As bicycle spaces are limited, advance reservations are usually required.

Travelling with your bicycle, bike trailer or tandem

All information on this page and in our European Train Planner applies to standard bicycles transported fully assembled. As space on board is limited, you will normally need to remove your panniers and other luggage before boarding.

Bike trailers are usually carried at the same rate as a bicycle. We recommend reserving an additional bicycle space for your trailer. When booking, please let us know which type of trailer you are bringing (for example, a BOB Yak or another model). Folding bike trailers are recommended as they take up less space on board.

Tandems

Tandems are not permitted on many European trains. In Germany, bicycles and tandems may not exceed 120 cm in length, except on certain regional trains with dedicated bicycle areas. Tandems are not permitted on Nightjet services or on domestic French TGV and Intercités trains. Other oversized or specially adapted bicycles are also often not accepted.

Recumbent bicycles

Recumbent bicycles are assessed according to their dimensions. Models with a short wheelbase that are no longer than a standard bicycle are generally accepted. Longer models are subject to the same restrictions as tandems. In Germany, they must not exceed 120 cm in length unless travelling on selected regional services.

Bicycles packed in a bike bag

If your bicycle is packed in a protective bag or case with maximum dimensions of 120 × 90 cm (with the handlebars turned and the front wheel removed), it can usually be carried free of charge as normal luggage on Eurostar and TGV services.
