Croatia and the motorail network
Croatia has been a favourite holiday destination for many people in northern Europe for decades. For decades, several German Railways DB Autozug trains ran in the summer from German cities to Split and Villach, on the Austrian-Slovenian coast and an excellent base for continuing one's journey to the Croatian coast. Since the demise of DB Autozug, the offer has become much less, but in recent years the ÖBB, the Austrian railways, has rebuilt a network of night trains, some of them with car transport. Now there is again a car train from Bratislava and Vienna to Split.

The Croatian port city of Split is ideally located on the Croatian coast. The charming harbour towns along the coast as well as the hundreds of islands are easy to reach. Several ferries a day depart from Split, most of them with car transport.
