The Kuranda Railway is the second shortest train ride of this list. In just three hours you drive from Cairns to Kuranda, straight through the rainforest. This wooden train has a history: some coaches are already ninety years old. During the ride you'll learn all about that history.

Halfway you have the opportunity to get off at Freshwater Station. From here you can get high above the rainforest with a cable car, 'the Kuranda Skyrail' for the perfect view of this million years old forest.

The Puffing Billy

In 1 hour and 50 minutes you will see the most beautiful pieces of the Sherbrooke forest, including the Mountain Ash tree.

Furthermore, you will encounter beautiful views of Port Philip Bay, Arthyrs Seat, Westernport and Paradise Valley. You can also get out a little sooner and enjoy the Emerald Lake Park.

The Ghan

This is probably the best known train in this list. On board this train you travel for 54 hours straight through the Outback via this route that is 2979 kilometers long.

Between Darwin and Alice Springs you will visit Uluru and Kata Tjuta, but you can also get off at Katherine and Nitmiluk Gorge. You can also do various excursions along the way. For example, you can dine under the stars and ride a camel. You can relax in the Outback Explorer Lounge at the end of the busy day.

The Spirit of the Outback

Prefer a slightly shorter trip through the Outback? In 24 hours you travel between Brisbane and Longreach through the Outback. During this ride you will experience the coast and all the cute villages along the way, such as Blackwater, Emerald and Barcaldine. Besides that, this journey is filled with beautiful sights you won't get enough of.
