The four suprisingly amazing train journeys you can make in Africa
12/14/2019

Africa may not be the first continent you think of when you think of train journeys, but did you know that you can  make beautiful and especially luxury train journeys here? These are the 4 most beautiful ones for you!

Rovos Rail

The Rovos Rail is probably Africa's most famous train company. This super luxurious train takes you from Cape Town, to the Victoria Falls, to Dar er Salaam and finally to the Sossuvlei in Namibia. The most popular and well-known route is the train journey between Cape Town and Pretoria, but you can also go from Lobito in Angola to Dar el Salaam in Tanzania or take a special golf safari. The options with Rovos are endless, but you probably have to save up for a while before making one of these journeys!

The Hwange train

The Hwange train is the total opposite of the Rovos Rail. The Hwange train takes you from Bulawayo to Victoria Falls in a train that gives you the feeling that you've gone a century back in time. Fortunately the price and the view make up for that. In addition, the train has been renovated and you can now even sleep in it! In Victoria Falls you can board and get a three-course meal, after which you spend the night on the train. The next day you transfer to the Elephant Express, where you will be brought in an open car to Ngamo in two hours, so you can enjoy the beautiful safari area there.

Blue train

This 1600-kilometer route between Pretoria and Cape Town is perhaps one of the most luxurious trains in the world. With a butler service, two panorama wagons, soundproof suites and several rooms with a full bathtub, you could call this a five-star hotel on wheels. Kings and presidents, among others, have taken a ride on this train. The train travels four different routes, including the Pretoria - Cape Town route and the Cape Town - Port Elizabeth route, but can even continue all the way to the Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe.

Shongololo Express

This train has all the luxury you need: a lounge area, dining cars, a bar, a panoramic car and even a souvenir shop. 72 guests can be transported here in luxury suite cabins with two single beds or a double bed. All this luxury is a good thing, because you can make the train ride last from 12 to 15 days. Along the way, the train also stops to drop its passengers off at the most beautiful places it crosses. You can think of South Africa, Mozambique, Namibia, Swaziland and Zimbabwe. Really worth it, so!
