Major Routes: 


Services between the large and medium sized cities in Germany and abroad with speeds up to 200 kph. First and second class available. The most important services convey a Bistro-coach with a limited number of drinks and meals, otherwise a catering trolley is available. Bikes are taken with a compulsory reservation.

Frequent services between the major cities in the country. No reservation needed, bikes are taken outside peak hours. Catering service on a few routes.

Frequent services between the major cities in the country. No reservation needed, bikes are taken. No onboard catering.

Frequent services between the major cities in the country. Reservation optional, bikes are taken. Most Intercity services have a dining car or catering trolley. Some have an on board restaurant.

Frequent services between the medium cities in the country. Reservation optional, bikes are taken with reservation. Most Intercity services have a catering trolley.

Long distance routes outside high speed lines. Reservation compulsory.

Depends on the country. Catering at seat in Austria, Switzerland and a few major Dutch routes. No catering in Belgium and Italy.


Free Wifi is available on Swiss and Dutch Intercity services.

Power sockets  

At all seats in first class.


Special compartments for familys and for parents with babys and toddlers. Children up to 14 years travel for free with their (grand)parents in Austrian and Swiss Intercity-trains


Dogs are taken as long they are on a leash and wear a muzzle. Dogs carried in a bench or bag travel for free, bigger dogs pay half the fare of an adult.


No luggage limit on board of IC-trains. Small luggage can be stowed in the overhead luggage racks or under your seat, for larger cases there are luggage racks in the compartments and near the outside doors. 


No check-in needed, you can turn up at the station and board the train at any time before departure. 

Discount cards - Bahncard 

The German Bahncard 25 and Bahndcard gives 25 or 50 percent discount on full fares. Furthermore the BahnCard 25 gives 25% off cheap Sparpreis-Europa-fares and Super-Sparpreis-Europa fares. International discount cards like Railplus, ÖBB Vorteilscard, Halbtaxabonnement and Voordeelurenabonnement give discounts on full fares on the part of the journey outside Germany.

Interrail / Eurail 

Interrail and Eurail are accepted on all EuroCity-services without supplement. Seat reservation is not compulsory but strongly recommended for long journeys or busy travel days (Fridays-Mondays) on German, Austrian and Swiss trains. Reservation is compulsory on trains running to/through/in/from Italy.

The first class onboard EuroCity-trains offers a comfortable and quiet working sphere. Special compartments for 6 persons are bookable on most EuroCity-services which are useable for on-board meetings. The ICE-lounge on German stations is open for all first class passengers (not all ticket fares apply). More information:  Business travel by train.

At the station

For first class passengers special lounges are avaible on large stations, both within Germany and abroad. For second class passengers waiting rooms and restaurants are located within all stations. The train number, destination and time of departure will be published at screens at the stations. The platform will be announced around 30 minutes for departure but always keep a look at the screens or listen to the announcements for any changes.
