By train to Jungfraujoch (3454m altitude)
Route 1: Interlaken – Grindelwald – cable car to Eigergletscher – Jungfraujoch (Top of Europe). Travel time from Interlaken: 1h37.
Route 2: Interlaken – Lauterbrunnen – Wengen – Kleine Scheidegg – Jungfraujoch (Top of Europe). Travel time: 2h07.

What is the Jungfraubahn?
The Jungfraubahn is the highest railway line in Europe, running from Kleine Scheidegg to Jungfraujoch station at 3454 metres above sea level. At the Top of Europe observatory at Jungfraujoch station you can enjoy breathtaking views of the Swiss Alps and the Aletsch Glacier.

It is one of the most extraordinary train experiences in the world – truly unforgettable. The final section of the route from Kleine Scheidegg runs mostly through tunnels under the Jungfrau summit, but the view from the observatory more than makes up for it.

The Jungfraubahn is best reached from Interlaken, from where two narrow-gauge lines lead to Kleine Scheidegg. One route goes via Grindelwald, the other via Lauterbrunnen and Wengen.

How can I book?
Seat reservations are not possible for trains from Interlaken. Both routes run every 30 minutes, so you can simply board the connection you prefer. There are several ways to book tickets:

As part of a rail tour through Switzerland: several of our packages include the Jungfraubahn as standard or as an optional excursion when booking. We arrange all necessary tickets and provide a comprehensive information package with timetables, descriptions and tips.

With a Swiss Travel Pass or Interrail Pass: both passes are valid up to Grindelwald/Wengen. From Grindelwald or Wengen to Jungfraujoch, a 25% discount applies.

With a Jungfrau Travel Pass: valid up to Eigergletscher, then 50% discount to Jungfraujoch.

With point-to-point tickets: the cheapest tickets from all over Switzerland can be booked via our train planner. As there are no reservations, tickets can never sell out.

What are the trains like?
The different sections of the route are operated by different companies, but all with modern, comfortable electric trains with air conditioning. As the routes are very steep, the trains use rack-and-pinion technology.

1st class is only available up to Lauterbrunnen/Grindelwald, the rest of the route is 2nd class only. All trains have large windows to enjoy the views to the fullest. There is no catering on board, but at all interchange stations there are shops and restaurants. Luggage space is limited, as the trains are mainly designed for day trips.

What if I miss a connection?
Although both routes have several transfers, the trains are very punctual and wait for each other. The risk of missing a connection is therefore minimal. And even if it happens, you can simply take the next train.

What is there to see? Any tips?
The Jungfraubahn is one of the most impressive railway lines in the world. A technical marvel, opened in 1912. On the way from Interlaken you will see stunning views of mountains, glaciers and alpine meadows. Both Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald are charming mountain villages.

At the top of the Jungfrau you can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and glaciers. There are also various attractions, such as an ice palace and the Sphinx observatory with a 360-degree view of the Alps.

There are also several hiking trails, including those across the famous Aletsch Glacier – the largest glacier in the Alps. Here you can walk on the glacier and admire the impressive views of the mountains and valleys.

The Jungfraubahn is an absolute must-see for anyone visiting Switzerland and wanting to experience the majestic Alps. The train journey to the top of the Jungfrau is an unforgettable experience that is more than worth it.
