A fantastic journey. Like travelling through a postcard. Also the offered excursions were more than worth it. We enjoyed it.

About & itinerary

Does Scotland have the most scenic railroads in Europe? At Happyrail we certainly think it's a contender. This Rail Tour features all of the amazing scenery that the country has to offer in one comfortable and exciting holiday by train. Watch the rugged mountains and pristine lakes go by as you visit amazing places on the Scottish coast. And because we've included hotels and guesthouses with a personal touch this will for sure be a trip to remember.

Day 1 - to London

Depart for the UK by high-speed train from the European station or airport of your choice. Alternatively, start in London itself, enjoy a day in this famous cosmopolitan and yet typically British city. You'll stay in a modern hotel close to St. Pancras/King’s Cross stations.

Day 2 - to Edinburgh

Today you board the first exciting train trip, as a fast express train takes you through the hills of Northern England to Edinburgh. You'll be staying in this charming city in a hotel near the train station. Take the afternoon to, for example, explore the Royal Mile street, visit the old castle or a whiskey distillery.

Day 3 - West Highland line

Board the express train to Glasgow, where you change for the local train to Oban. The West Highland Line has been voted the world’s prettiest railway. Enjoy the serene Scottish scenery as you pass over many historical bridges including the Glenfinnan viaduct (made famous by the Harry Potter movies). In Oban you'll stay in a guesthouse close to the harbour.

Day 4 - Oban & isle of Mull

From Oban you can visit the colorful village of Tobermory by ferry and bus as a day trip, to discover the beautiful surrounding nature end enjoy the many local restaurants, shops and distilleries. Or you can travel to the beautiful island of Iona, a tiny island just a few kilometres across with a deep historical and religious significance. It is the ideal place in Scotland to enjoy the natural wilderness.

Day 5 - Fort William

Continue your journey on the West Highland Railway, this time on the branch to Fort William. Continue to be amazed by the seemingly endless landscape of rugges hills and beautifl glinstering lakes. In Fort WIlliam you'll stay in a local guesthouse near the train station.

Day 6 - Isle of Skye

Board the West Highland Railway for the last part of the journey to Mallaig, an exceptionally beautiful part of the railway line. In Mallaig the ferry is waiting at the train station to take you to the Isle of Skye, where you visit the beautiful historic gardens of Armadale Castle. After this you board the bus to Portree, a beautiful tiny village on the coast surrounded by cliffs, where you stay in a local guesthouse.

Day 7 - Kyle of Lochalsh line

Board the bus to Kyle of Lochalsh on the mainland. Here you board the local train to Inverness along the Kyle of Lochalsh line, less well known than the West Highland line equally as beautiful and even more rustic. The train takes you past endless forests, beaches and bays, to arrive in Inverness in the afternoon, where you stay in a local guesthouse.

Day 8 - York

Take the comfortable high-speed train to the English city of York, with it's small but beautifully preserved and protected historic city center. Visit the cathedral and the national railway museum, one of Europe's largest train museums featuring the iconic Japanese Bullet train and record-breaking locomotives. You stay in a traditional hotel in the city center.

Day 9 - return trip

After another morning of sightseeing in York, you board the express train to London. You arrive in London in the late afternoon, where you either end your journey or change to the direct Eurostar high-speed train to the European station of your choice.

For passengers ending their journey in London an extra night is booked as standard in London. Leave London on the 10th day or extend the amount of nights you stay here as you see fit.
