Beautiful railway journeys with relaxed travel days through the heart of Scotland. Explore the Highlands, lochs and islands on some of the country's most scenic railways. Many of the routes lead to places that can only be reached by train. Travel through the Highland moorlands, where the landscape is shaped by the characteristic peat-brown waters that seem to flow everywhere, even after dry weather. Experience Scotland's warm hospitality and friendly welcome, with stays in carefully selected small-scale hotels and guesthouses.
Day by day
Day 1
Travel by train to Edinburgh. From London King's Cross, follow the famous East Coast Main Line along the North Sea coast to Scotland's capital. Overnight stay in Edinburgh.
Day 2
Enjoy one of Scotland's most scenic railway journeys via Glasgow and alongside Loch Lomond to Oban on the west coast. Stay in a comfortable hotel within walking distance of the station and harbour, such as The Ranald.
Day 3
Free day in Oban. Take a ferry to the Isle of Mull and visit the colourful harbour town of Tobermory, or continue to the beautiful island of Iona. Overnight stay in Oban.
Day 4
Travel by train across the remote Rannoch Moor to Fort William. Stay at, for example, Guisachan House, with wonderful views over Loch Linnhe and the surrounding mountains, or another accommodation in the town.
Day 5 (not daily)
Continue to Portree on the rugged Isle of Skye. The most scenic route begins with the train to Mallaig, crossing the famous Glenfinnan Viaduct, well known from the Harry Potter films. From Mallaig, take the ferry to Armadale on Skye, followed by a local bus to Portree.
Alternatively, a direct bus from Fort William to Portree travels via Eilean Donan Castle and across the Skye Bridge. Outside the main season (until mid-May and from mid-September), and sometimes on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, this is the only available route to Portree.
Please note: If accommodation in Portree is unavailable, you may stay in nearby Broadford instead.
Day 6
Take a scenic bus journey from Portree to Kyle of Lochalsh, then continue by train on one of Scotland's most beautiful railway lines to Inverness, the capital of the Highlands. Overnight stay in a centrally located hotel.
Day 7 (not Saturdays or Sundays)
Board the direct morning train from Inverness through the Highlands to London King's Cross.
