One of the world's most scenic railway journeys

Travel on the regular Oslo–Bergen railway, used by Norwegians every day

Recommended stop: Myrdal and the Flåm Railway to Flåm at sea level

The Bergen Railway (Bergensbanen) is one of the world's most scenic train journeys, connecting Oslo and Bergen across the mountains of Norway. Opened in 1909, this famous railway is popular with both visitors and Norwegians alike. Covering around 500 kilometres, the route passes through some of the country's most spectacular landscapes.

The Route

Travelling on the Bergen Railway takes you through an ever-changing landscape of mountains, valleys, rivers and lakes. One of the most remarkable sections is the crossing of the Hardangervidda, Europe's largest mountain plateau, where vast open landscapes stretch as far as the eye can see. If you're lucky, you may even spot wild reindeer along the way.

Highlights Along the Way

The Bergen Railway also offers the opportunity to visit some of Norway's most attractive towns and villages. Voss is well known for its outdoor activities, including rafting and skiing, while picturesque Flåm, located on the beautiful Aurlandsfjord, is one of Norway's most popular destinations.

Flåm is reached via the famous Flåm Railway (Flåmsbana), which branches off from the Bergen Railway at Myrdal. This spectacular mountain railway descends from the high plateau to sea level and is regarded as one of the world's finest branch line journeys.

Beautiful in Every Season

The scenery along the Bergen Railway changes dramatically throughout the year. During summer, the mountains are covered with wildflowers and long daylight hours provide endless views. In winter, snow-covered landscapes, frozen waterfalls and white mountain plateaus transform the route into a true winter wonderland.
