The Flåm Railway (Flåmsbana) is one of Norway's most famous railway lines, renowned for its spectacular scenery. Regarded as one of the world's steepest standard-gauge railway journeys, it offers breathtaking views of fjords, mountains, waterfalls and dramatic valleys.

The Route

The Flåm Railway runs between the mountain station of Myrdal and the village of Flåm on the shores of the Aurlandsfjord, a branch of the Sognefjord. The journey covers around 20 kilometres and takes approximately one hour, descending from the mountain plateau to sea level.

Highlights Along the Way

Along the route you pass impressive waterfalls, deep valleys, steep mountain slopes and countless bridges and tunnels. One of the highlights is the spectacular Kjosfossen waterfall, where the train makes a short stop so you can admire the scenery and take photographs.

Part of a Larger Rail Journey

The Flåm Railway connects with the Bergen Railway at Myrdal, making it easy to include in a longer rail tour through Norway. From Flåm, many travellers continue by boat across the fjords towards Bergen, creating one of Norway's most scenic travel combinations.
