Vienna is an ideal destination for a city trip by train. The city has numerous sights and a pleasant, relaxed atmosphere. Vienna is easily accessible by train, by day with the comfortable ICE and by night with the night train.
Sights
In the center of the Austrian capital, Vienna, stands St. Stephen's Cathedral. From the top there is a beautiful view over the city.
In the immediate vicinity of St. Stephen's Cathedral are a number of famous coffee houses.
From the square in front of St. Stephen's Cathedral, the St. Stephansplatz, you can walk straight into Kärntner Strasse, one of the best shopping streets in Vienna.
At the end of this street is the world-famous opera house of Vienna. Every evening there are opera or ballet performances here.
The opera house is located on the famous Ring with the promenade around the old city center which in the 19th century was filled with palaces, one even more colossal than the other.
If you don't walk from the Stephansplatz into the Kärntner Strass, but in the other direction, you reach Schwedenplatz, the central point of Vienna's nightlife. Schwedenplatz is located directly on the old Danube.
Walking to the west, you come to another attraction, the Hofburg, the palace complex of the former rulers of the Habsburg Empire. This complex of palaces is located within the boundaries of the old town.
Another highlight is Schönbrunn, the huge palace with the large garden on the outskirts of Vienna. This complex is easily accessible by metro.
Vienna is also a city with beautiful parks. These can mainly be found along the Ring Road and each has a different character.
Tip: also visit the wine fields on the north side of the city. These can be reached by streetcar. On the tops of the hills there is a beautiful view over the whole city.
