Thalys - Information



The Thalys is a high-speed service from Brussels, Amsterdam and Cologne/Dusseldorf/Essen to Paris; departing from Brussels every 30 minutes during peak hours (travel time from Brussels is 1h20min).

Between Amsterdam and Paris about 14 Thalys trains per day connect the capital of France with the capital of The Netherlands (travel time 3h18min) and between Cologne and Paris there are about 5 connections each day (travel time 3h26min) of which 3 trains run from/to Dusseldorf (3h53min) and Essen (4h25min).

For second class passengers there is a Bistro-coach available on each Thalys-service selling drinks, hot and cold dishes and snacks. For first class Premium passengers a meal including drinks is included in the ticket. 


Wifi is available for free.

Power sockets  

Available at all seats.


Children up to 3 years travel for free when they don't need a seat. There are special discounted fares for children from 4 up to 11 years. Baby changing facilities are located in the toilets of coaches 7, 17 and 27.


Small dogs travelling in a bag or bench are taken for free. Larger dogs pay the special "Dog"-fare. Dogs must be kept on a leash and be muzzled all times. Guidance dogs are taken for free.


Officially there is a luggage limit of two large suitcases per passengers with the height+width+length not larger than 158 cm and not heavier then 32 kg each, but in practice this isn't enforced.  There are luggage racks for big suitcases and backpacks near the entrance doors, for smaller bags there is space in the overhead luggage racks and under your seat. You have to label your bags. Labels are available at all stations. Some items (firearms, gas holders and large knives) are prohibited on Thalys-services.


At the train stations of Paris, Lille and Brussels there is a check-in with ticket check and x-ray of your luggage, it's advisable to be at the train station 30 minutes before departure. At all other stations there is no check-in but doors will be closed 2 minutes before departure time so be at the station in time.

Discount cards  

Discount Cards like Railplus don't give a discount on Thalys-services.

Interrail / Eurail 

Passengers with a valid Interrail or Eurail-pass can use the special Pass-fare on Thalys-services. Second class pass holders pay €25 for a single journey, first class €35. When you travel with a Global pass, it'll cover your whole trip, whichever is the route you're taking. When traveling on a one-or-two-travel-pass, ask for the appropriate reservations.

At the station

Please note the check-in times at some stations (see boarding). All Thalys-stations offer waiting rooms and shops/restaurants for second class passengers. First class passengers can use the NS International-lounges at Amsterdam, Schiphol Airport and Rotterdam. Holders of Thalys ThePass and TheCard can use the Thalys-lounge in Brussels, Cologne and Paris.
