Four underrated, but amazingly beautiful train journeys
7/6/2019

We established the 4 most special train journeys in Asia for you.

Toy trains, India

The toy trains run over three tracks in India: the Kalka-Shimla Railway, the Nilgiri Mountain Railway and the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway. These mountain railways used to serve as access to the colonial settlements in the mountains and are now part of the UNESCO World Heritage list. The routes give a beautiful view of the mountain landscape of India.

Kandy - Ella, Sri Lanka

This seven-hour train ride from Kandy to Ella is full of green hills, plantations, rice fields, beautiful waterfalls and authentic villages. On the way you simple can't skip Nuware Eliya: this village is surrounded by tea plantations.

After the stop you ride through the jungle landscape over the gigantic Nine Arch Bridge.

Tip: you can also do this train journey the other way around. That way the ride is just as beautiful, but a lot less crowded!

Mandalay - Hsipaw, Myanmar

During this train ride you drive through the most beautiful landscape of Myanmar. Through the rugged, green, mountainous landscape you drive towards the Goteik Viaduct. This impressive construction takes you across a gigantic valley. The train runs extra slowly on this stretch, so everyone on the train can enjoy the amazing view of the valley even better.

Singapore - Bangkok, Singapore and Thailand

The Eastern and Oriental Express run many different routes, but the route between Singapore and Bangkok is the most popular route. Moreover, it's not the cheapest train journey in Asia, but you'll have a steward service in your private cabin 24 hours a day.

From the comfort of your private cabin you can see the most beautiful landscapes with a multitude of colonial cities, tea plantations and a gigantic amount of temples. In other words: sights that will never bore you.
