The Botniabanen opened in 2012 on the route from Stockholm via Umea to Lapland. Beautiful views along the Gulf of Bothnia with rugged coastline, islands and beaches. With a maximum speed of 250km/h it´s the longest single track high speed line in the world. Via Stockholm and the university city of Umea (Sweden's fastest growing city) to Lapland and further to Finland. Through the lake area from Finland to Helsinki and particularly beautiful crossing Finland - Sweden along the Alande Islands.

Itinerary

Day 1

Arrival in Stockholm. Stay on MS Mälardrottningen, a unique ***-star hotel boat on Lake Mälar near the station, quietly located in the center (most cabins with bunk beds). Gamla Stan and Central Station within walking distance. Alternative stay in regular hotel possible.

Day 2

By high speed train along the Gulf of Bothnia over the Botniabanen to Umeå. Hotel near the train station.

Day 3 (not on Saturday)

Morning train Botniabanen to Boden, by bus along old railroad line to Kemi in Finland. Further into Finland by train to Oulu, overnight stay.

Day 4

IC train through the lake district to Kupio, overnight stay. Many boat trips possible, also canoe rental. See also building block Kuopio - Savonlinna.

Day 5

Morning train to central Finland and along numerous lakes to Helsinki. Here you´ll stay overnight.

Day 6

End of the afternoon by train to Turku. Here you´ll stay overnight.

Day 7

Dayferry via the Aland Islands to Stockholm.
