Day 1 - To Cologne
Travel by high-speed train from the station/airport of your choice to Cologne, where you stay in a modern hotel close to the train station and the Rhine. You arrive in the late morning to late afternoon depending on where you travel from. This former Roman outpost is now a major cultural centre, filled with museums, galleries and clubs. It has the most pubs per capita in all of Germany, so you have plenty of choices to try a pint of beer.
Day 2 - The Rhine & Assmanshausen
In the morning a regional train brings you along the Rhine to the small village of St. Goarshausen. After some time for lunch on the riverbank, you board a traditional riverboat for a 3-hour cruise upstream to Assmannshausen through the beautiful Rhine Gorge. Enjoy the views onto more than 20 castles along the way. Assmanshausen is a small village with old city centre, where you stay in a traditional German hotel.
Day 3 - Heidelberg
Regional trains bring you further along the Rhine via Mainz to Heidelberg. You disembark at the train station close to the old city centre. Heidelberg has a beautiful Baroque old town, with many museums and oppertunities for shopping. Take a walk to the former castle, with beautiful views onto the city. Accomodation in a traditional hotel in the old town.
Day 4 - Rothenburg ob der Tauber
Regional trains take you to Rothenburg via the slow route through quaint German villages, crossing the Rhine once again. Rothenburg is one of the best preserved medieval villages anywhere in Europe and is one of the highlights of Germany's Romantic Road. Accomodations in a family-owned traditional hotel with restaurant near the train station.
Day 5 - Füssen
Regional and Intercity-trains take you across Southern Germany to the town of Füssen, home of Neuschwanstein castle. You stay in a traditional hotel close to the train station.
Day 6 - Neuschwanstein Castle
Time to visit the legendary Neuschwanstein castle, as well as the lesser-known but equally beautiful Hohenschwangau castle. Busses depart every 30 minutes from Füssen to the castles. The last part of the ascent to the castle is on foot. For those less enchanted by castles, a relaxing cruise on beautiful Forggensee lake is highly reccommended, with beautiful Alpine views. The Füssen museum of the bavarian Kings provides an interesting overview of the region's history.
Day 7 - Munich
A direct regional train takes you in about 2 hours from Füssen to Munich, Bavaria's capital. Enjoy this city full of history and cuisine - trying a beer at one of the famous beer halls is a must-do. Accomodations in a modern hotel close to the main train station.
Day 8 - Return or stay in Munich
High-speed trains take you back to your starting point. You can stay longer in Munich or any other part of the rail tour, by customizing the length in the booking menu. Feel free to contact us for more information or advice.Munich is a city with a lot to do and see, with many interesting museums like the old Bavarian Imperial palace now open to the public - we highly recommend staying one or two days longer. A day trip to Augsburg or Nürnberg is also well worth it.
