Mountain/Panoramic Train SwitzerlandFrom Zermatt up to the Gornergrat at 3089 metres altitude

One of the most spectacular railway lines in Europe.

General information
The Gornergrat Railway runs from Zermatt up to the Gornergrat at 3089 metres altitude. From here you have the best views of the Matterhorn and the surrounding mountains of Zermatt. Although the Jungfraubahn goes higher, the final section of that railway runs through a tunnel, making the Gornergrat Railway the highest open-air railway in Europe. This makes the Gornergrat one of the most spectacular railway lines in Europe.
How to book the Gornergrat Railway?
The Gornergrat Railway is included – or can be booked as an optional excursion – in several of our Swiss rail tours. All tickets are included, along with a detailed itinerary and information package.
Tickets for the train can also be purchased via our train planner. However, we recommend planning a Swiss rail journey with a Swiss Travel Pass or Interrail Pass, which are always available through our website at the lowest price. Reservations are not possible; you can take any train you like.
When do the trains run? What are they like?
The line operates all year round. From early morning until 16:30 trains run every 24 minutes. In the evening there is an hourly service. The ride up takes 33 minutes, the ride down 44 minutes.
The Gornergrat trains have 2nd class only. They are modern, comfortable trains with large windows. There is no catering on board, but excellent restaurants are available both in Zermatt and at the top of the Gornergrat. Luggage space is limited, but at Zermatt station there are large luggage lockers where you can leave bigger suitcases during your trip on the Gornergrat Railway.
What is there to see?
The view from the Gornergrat is unmatched, even in Switzerland. You can see many famous peaks, including the Matterhorn, the glaciers of Monte Rosa and the picturesque Riffelsee (visible in clear weather).
We recommend visiting the elegant restaurant at the summit, with a stunning view of the Monte Rosa massif. Be sure to try traditional cheese dishes and rösti specialities.
In addition to the breathtaking views, the Gornergrat Railway also offers various activities at the top of the mountain. There are several hiking trails to explore, as well as an astronomical observatory and a restaurant where you can enjoy traditional Swiss dishes.
