General information
The Lucerne–Interlaken Express is one of Switzerland’s official panoramic trains, linking Interlaken – the starting point of both the Jungfraubahn and the GoldenPass line – with the beautiful city of Lucerne on the famous Swiss lakes. It is one of the shortest panoramic train journeys in Switzerland, yet still an unforgettable experience.

The train, with panoramic windows, climbs over the Brünig Pass, through forests and past crystal-clear lakes. Between Giswil and Meiringen the train uses a cogwheel system to climb the Brünig Pass, offering spectacular views of the landscape below.

How to book
The Lucerne–Interlaken Express is included as standard in several of our rail tours through Switzerland. These packages include both train tickets and seat reservations in panoramic coaches in 1st or 2nd class.

Both Interrail passes and Swiss Travel Passes are valid on the Lucerne–Interlaken Express. Reservations are not mandatory, but strongly recommended, especially for panoramic coaches during high season. These can be booked after purchasing an Interrail or Swiss Pass via the “reservations” option in our train planner.

Point-to-point tickets can also be purchased via our train planner.

What are the trains like?
The Lucerne–Interlaken Express trains are modern, comfortable electric trains with 1st and 2nd class, and panoramic windows in half of the coaches. Seat reservations in these panoramic coaches are strongly recommended. In the middle of the train there is a dining car serving drinks, snacks and hot meals. Wifi is available throughout the train, and special luggage racks are located next to the seats.

Tips – what should I see?
The Lucerne–Interlaken Express is perfect to combine in a longer travel itinerary. In Lucerne, you can explore this beautiful city with its historic centre, or transfer to a paddle steamer on Lake Lucerne, connecting in Vitznau with the Rigi Railway or in Flüelen with the Gotthard Panorama Express.

Interlaken is the starting point of the GoldenPass Express, which is often combined with the Lucerne–Interlaken Express in a single journey. In addition, Interlaken is the gateway to the Jungfrau region, where you can experience spectacular train rides such as the Jungfraubahn.
