Excursions included
Day 1: Dar es Salaam
At 12:00 pm the train departs from Tazar station. Here you'll meet your fellow travelers and the crew. Through the beautiful landscapes of Tanzania, the train will travel to the Selous. During dinner the train will continue to Fuga Halt, where it'll stop for the night.
Day 2: Selous safari
If time permits, you can enjoy a safari in Africa's largest nature reserve after an early breakfast. After this, you'll take the train to conquer the Udzungwa Mountains, where the view alternates itself at lightning speed between viaducts, tunnels and steep rock faces. In the evening, the train will stop in Mlimba.
Day 3: Makambako
After breakfast, a walk through the village of Makambako is possible if time permits. After this, you'll travel further past baobab forests and as the train descends into the Rift Valley. Before you go to sleep, don't forget to set your clock back an hour!
Day 4: Chisimba Falls
Today you'll cross the border into Zambia. You'll travel via the Tazara railroad along the best kept secrets of Africa. In the afternoon you'll have the opportunity to take a nice walk along the Chisimba Falls to admire it from different angles.
Day 5 and 6: On board
As the journey to Cape Town continues, the train passes the Kafue railroad bridge and through Zambia's capital, Lusaka. During this leg you can think about how you'd like to spend your time in Victoria Falls and which activities you'd like to book.
Day 7 and 8: Victoria Falls
With a small backpack of overnight belongings, you'll leave the train on day 7 to explore Victoria Falls. In the afternoon you'll sail on a sunset cruise down the Zambezi, after which you'll spend the night at the Livingstone Room, Victoria Falls Hotel. The next morning you'll leave the hotel and have the entire day free to spend in this special city. At 17:00 the train departs further towards Cape Town.
Day 9: On board
During breakfast the train will cross the border of Botswana and not much later the Tropic of Capricorn will be passed. The rest of the day you can admire the beautiful, desert-like landscape of the Kalahari Basin from your luxury compartment.
Day 10 to 12: Madikwe Safari Reserve
On day 10, after crossing the border into South Africa, you'll be asked to bring a small bag for a two-night stay. After breakfast you'll be transferred to a lodge in Madikwe, from where you'll go on safari for the next two days. The first safari takes place on the same afternoon already, after which dinner will be served at the lodge. The next day you'll go on safari both in the early morning and in the evening. On the last day, you'll go on one more safari in the morning before the journey to Pretoria continues.
Day 13: Pretoria
Via the gold mines, the journey continues to Pretoria. Here you'll get to do a walking tour of the station and a locomotive workshop. In the afternoon the train leaves for Kimberley.
Day 14: Kimberley
In the morning you'll get a tour of the Kimberley Diamond Mine Museum and the Big Hole. After lunch the train travels through Karoo: a desert area that has unique views to offer.
Day 15: Matjiesfontein and Cape Town
On this last day you can disembark in Matjiesfontein after breakfast. Here you'll have the opportunity to walk through this historic village. After this, the train journey continues and during lunch you'll drive through the impressive Hex River Valley. Around 18:00 you'll arrive in Cape Town, where you can say goodbye to the crew and your fellow passengers. The journey comes to an end here.
