Beautiful Pyrenees, rugged Spain, Zaragoza and Aragón, and remarkable railway lines. Climb through the Pyrenees to 1,281 metres on the narrow-gauge Train Jaune, with open carriages in summer, and continue by train straight through Aragón.

Day by day

Day 1

Travel by Eurostar from London St Pancras to Paris, then continue by TGV towards the Conflent region, south of Perpignan. Depending on the available train connections, the route may run via Paris, Lyon, Nîmes or Perpignan. You then continue at a more leisurely pace by regional train to Prades.
Stay at a bed and breakfast in Prades, for example Maison de Prades.

Day 2

Free day in Prades. Visit nearby Villefranche-de-Conflent, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the market in Prades (Tuesday/Saturday), or one of the beautifully situated abbeys in the area.

Day 3

Take the Train Jaune up to Latour-de-Carol (1,281 m). This train, nicknamed the Canary, is painted in the colours of the Catalan flag: yellow with a red stripe. In summer, open carriages are available, allowing you to enjoy the surroundings even more. The train winds its way up through narrow valleys. In Latour-de-Carol, change to a Spanish train for the descent on the Spanish side of the mountains to Ribes de Freser. The station is around a 15-minute walk from the village. Overnight stay at, for example, Hotel Els Caçadors***. From the hotel's rooftop terrace, you can look out over the Núria Valley.
Please note: the Train Jaune often does not operate in spring and autumn due to maintenance work. In 2026, this applies from 9 March to 10 April; October dates are expected to follow later.

Day 4

Free morning in Ribes de Freser. For example, take the rack railway 1,000 m up to Núria in the high mountains. In the afternoon, take the Rodalies train to Vic (1 hour). Hotel Estació del Nord*** is located in the railway station building (no night train services).

Day 5

Depart for Barcelona in the morning. You may wish to visit the spectacularly located Monastery of Montserrat (not included). Overnight stay in Barcelona at a hotel near Sants station, for example Hotel Abba Sants.

Day 6

Travel to Zaragoza by AVE high-speed train. Your four-star hotel is located near the railway station which, like many Spanish AVE stations, is situated outside the city centre. The centre of Zaragoza is, however, easy to reach by public transport.

Day 7

Early departure for your journey along the Canfranero, the railway running through Aragón towards the Pyrenees. Enjoy beautiful scenery and impressive rock formations along the way. In Canfranc, change to the bus to Bedous and then continue by train to Pau. Your hotel is located in the city centre, for example Appart'City Confort Pau Centre.

Day 8

Free morning to stroll along the Boulevard des Pyrénées in Pau or explore the attractive city centre. In the afternoon, take the train to Bayonne. You stay here for two nights, for example at the Ibis Styles hotel near the station.

Day 9

Day at leisure for sightseeing or a visit to the beach. Highly recommended is an excursion by train, bus and rack railway to the summit of La Rhune, the westernmost Pyrenean peak in the Basque Country. The views from here are magnificent. Overnight stay in Bayonne.

Day 10

Travel by TGV to Paris Montparnasse, transfer by Metro to Gare du Nord and continue by Eurostar to London St Pancras.

After France discontinued international rail services with Spain in 1970, the building gradually fell into disrepair. Renovation began in 2014 and the hotel opened in 2023. It has 104 rooms, three restaurants, including one Michelin-starred restaurant, and a wellness centre.
