How much does a train ticket cost?
The price of a ticket depends on:
- How far in advance you book
- Peak/less busy travel dates
- Which railway company/carrier the booking is with
- Use of a rail pass (yes/no)
- Type of train (for example Eurostar/ICE/TGV)
- Number of travellers (due to group/saver discounts)
- Ages of travellers (children may travel free depending on age)
- Discount cards
What increases the chance of a low fare?
1) Book early (many daytime services are released 3–6 months ahead, Eurostar often 4 months and night trains up to 6 months; advance booking recommended);
2) Avoid peak dates—e.g. Fridays, Sundays and school-holiday Saturdays when promotional fares are scarce;
3) Compare fares; differences between the lowest offers from different operators (e.g. Eurostar, TGV, ICE, ÖBB) can be significant—HappyRail always looks for the best-value, most comfortable option;
4) Travel mid-week—Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday give the best chance of discounted fares.
