Eurail - 7 PM Rule

Leaving after 7 pm

If you have a flexi card (for example, 5 days within 10 days) it can save a lot of time and money to observe the 19.00 hour rule. This means that when a train is taken after 7 pm it can be noted as one travel day (ie the next day if the train arrives at its destination after 4 am in the morning)

Imagine traveling on July 5 from Rome to Munich with the night train. The travel day that you note on the Interrail Pass is 6 July. For example, if you are traveling from Munich to the Netherlands on 6 July, you have traveled a great distance and only took one travel day.

Trains in Europe - Luggage on-board

General

Taking luggage on-board of trains in Europe can't be compared to taking luggage on flights - except for the Eurostar to London there are no (strict) check-ins for trains in Europe.

Some rail operators have a limit on what you can take with you - often very generous - but in practice it's seldom checked. The informal rule is that you can take what you can carry. For the formal policies, see the list below of the major rail operators in Europe.

Luggage on-board of trains - Major trains / rail operators:

Trains in Europe - Left luggage at stations

Left luggage at stations

All major train stations in Europe have lockers or manned left luggage offices with opening hours from early in the morning to late in the evening.

It costst around €5 to store your bag for a day.

Trains in Europe - Food & drinks on-board

Food & drinks on-board

In first class on most long distance and high speed trains in Europe free drinks and snacks or meals are included   - also if you have a first class Eurail pass!

If you have a second class ticket you can buy on most trains in Europe drinks and snacks in the bistro carriage or at the at-seat catering trolley.

Trains in Europe - Wifi

Wifi on-board of trains

Almost all Intercity services and high speed trains in Europe have free Wifi on-board.

In general the connections are stable and work great to check mail, news or messages on your phone. However,  streaming on Netflix, Youtube or Spotify is often not possible, but there are some exceptions like the Thalys from Paris to Amsterdam (Netflix blocked!) or the ICE high speeds trains in Germany for example from Berlin to Munich
