Experience the highlights of German Romanticism on this varied rail tour through Germany. Travel along the Rhine past castles, vineyards and the legendary Lorelei, including a cruise with KD – Köln-Düsseldorfer. Visit Heidelberg, one of the world's most beautiful and famous historic towns, with its impressive castle ruins overlooking the River Neckar.

Continue along the scenic Neckar Valley railway to Rothenburg ob der Tauber, one of Germany's best-preserved medieval towns and the highlight of the Romantic Road. The journey concludes with a visit to the fairytale Neuschwanstein Castle.

Day by day

Day 1

Travel by Eurostar and ICE to Cologne, then continue via Koblenz to St. Goarshausen. If you wish, break your journey with a short stop in Cologne or Koblenz. In St. Goarshausen, board a KD – Köln-Düsseldorfer cruise (early April to late October). Sail along the most scenic stretch of the Rhine, passing more than 20 castles, historic towns and the legendary Lorelei. Overnight in Assmannshausen, for example at Hotel Alte Bauernschänke***.

Day 2

In the morning, travel by train via Frankfurt to Heidelberg. Stay in a centrally located *** hotel in the historic centre. Explore one of the world's most beautiful and famous towns. The impressive castle ruins overlook the River Neckar.

Day 3

In the morning, travel along the scenic Neckar Valley railway via Osterburken and Würzburg to Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Stay at Hotel Goldenes Fass***, close to the railway station. Rothenburg ob der Tauber is one of Germany's best-preserved medieval towns and the highlight of the Romantic Road. Walk along the completely preserved medieval town walls.

Day 4

Travel by train via Steinach and Kaufbeuren to Füssen, at the southern end of the Romantic Road. Stay at a *** hotel close to the railway station, for example Hotel Sonne or Hotel Schlosskrone.

Day 5

Time to explore Füssen and its surroundings. Take the bus to Neuschwanstein Castle near Hohenschwangau (journey time approximately 15 minutes). Entrance tickets should be reserved several weeks or months in advance. Füssen's historic centre, with the Hohe Schloss, is also well worth a visit, or enjoy a walk along the River Lech. Overnight in Füssen.

Day 6

Return to Great Britain by ICE and Eurostar.
