Day 1

Travel from London St Pancras by Eurostar and ICE via Brussels and Frankfurt to Weimar, arriving in the late afternoon. Stay, for example, at Hotel Kaiserin Augusta***, opposite the station.

Day 2

Spend the day in Weimar. Weimar is the city of Goethe and Schiller, with idyllic squares and narrow streets and the summer residences of Belvedere and Tiefurt. Visit Goethe’s former home. On Theaterplatz stands Weimar’s best-known and most photographed monument: the statue of the close friends and writers Goethe and Schiller.

Day 3

Travel by train in the morning to Leipzig Hauptbahnhof, Germany’s largest railway station. Leipzig is a city of trade and literature. Stay, for example, at the Vienna House Easy****, near the Hauptbahnhof.
The city is rich in cultural history: Leipzig is closely associated with Bach, the Peaceful Revolution and the Battle of the Nations against Napoleon.
Recommended: follow the Leipziger Notenspur, an independent city walk of approximately 4 km taking in the Bach Museum, St Thomas Church, where Bach is buried, and St Nicholas Church, where many of his works were performed. You can also visit the Gewandhaus, Robert Schumann’s former home and the Mendelssohn House. Leipzig lives and breathes music.

Day 4

Travel by train in the morning to Dresden Hauptbahnhof. Stay, for example, at the Occidental Hotel Dresden****, close to the station and the historic city centre.

Day 5

Spend the day in Dresden, the Florence on the Elbe and one of Germany’s great cities of art and culture. In the Baroque Old Town, famous landmarks such as the Frauenkirche, Semperoper, Royal Palace and Zwinger Palace have been restored to their former splendour. Also recommended: take a historic paddle steamer along the Elbe to Pillnitz Palace, Saxon Switzerland, Meissen or Pirna.

Day 6

Return to London by ICE and Eurostar trains via Berlin.
