Day 1
Travel by Eurostar and connecting trains to Würzburg, in the north-west of Bavaria. On the edge of the Old Town stands the impressive Würzburg Residence, the starting point of the Romantic Road and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visit the palace and its courtyard gardens before continuing by regional train to Bamberg (approx. 1 hour).
Stay, for example, at Hotel Messerschmitt, on the edge of the Old Town.
Day 2
Since 1993, the entire Old Town of Bamberg has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its compact historic centre can easily be explored in half a day.
Optional: book an extra night and visit the Franconian Switzerland Nature Park (see the Extensions & Extras tab). Overnight stay in Bamberg.
Day 3
Travel by train from Bamberg to Bayreuth (approx. 1 hour), the city of Richard Wagner. On the Green Hill (Grüner Hügel) stands the famous Festspielhaus, built exclusively for performances of his operas.
Later, continue by train to Nuremberg (approx. 1 hour). Stay, for example, at the IntercityHotel, close to the railway station.
Day 4 (+ optional extension)
Extension to Regensburg: Travel by train to Regensburg (approx. 1 hour). Stay, for example, at Hotel Münchner Hof in the historic city centre.
Or continue the return journey: Travel via Ansbach and Steinach to Rothenburg ob der Tauber (approx. 1 hour), the jewel of the Romantic Road, completely surrounded by medieval town walls. In the afternoon, continue by train to Würzburg for your return journey to Great Britain.
