Beautiful, varied journey. The Unesco cities are very worthwhile. The distances between these cities were covered by regional trains, often via single track, which gave a nice rail-away feeling.
all-reviews

Train tour to Bavaria's most beautiful cities and UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Visit the Würzburg Residence, the Old Town of Bamberg, the Margravial Opera House in Bayreuth, Regensburg and Rothenburg ob der Tauber.

Day by day

Day 1

Travel by Eurostar and connecting trains to Würzburg, in the north-west of Bavaria. On the edge of the Old Town stands the impressive Würzburg Residence, the starting point of the Romantic Road and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visit the palace and its courtyard gardens before continuing by regional train to Bamberg (approx. 1 hour).

Stay, for example, at Hotel Messerschmitt, on the edge of the Old Town.

Day 2

Since 1993, the entire Old Town of Bamberg has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its compact historic centre can easily be explored in half a day.

Optional: book an extra night and visit the Franconian Switzerland Nature Park (see the Extensions & Extras tab). Overnight stay in Bamberg.

Day 3

Travel by train from Bamberg to Bayreuth (approx. 1 hour), the city of Richard Wagner. On the Green Hill (Grüner Hügel) stands the famous Festspielhaus, built exclusively for performances of his operas.

Later, continue by train to Nuremberg (approx. 1 hour). Stay, for example, at the IntercityHotel, close to the railway station.

Day 4 (+ optional extension)

Extension to Regensburg: Travel by train to Regensburg (approx. 1 hour). Stay, for example, at Hotel Münchner Hof in the historic city centre.

Or continue the return journey: Travel via Ansbach and Steinach to Rothenburg ob der Tauber (approx. 1 hour), the jewel of the Romantic Road, completely surrounded by medieval town walls. In the afternoon, continue by train to Würzburg for your return journey to Great Britain.
