Paradores

Paradores are unique hotels located in former monasteries, castles, haciendas and other architecturally significant historic buildings. They are operated by the Spanish government to preserve Spain's cultural heritage while offering guests an exceptional place to stay.

Day 1

Travel by Eurostar from London St Pancras to Paris Gare du Nord. Transfer by Metro to Paris Montparnasse and continue by TGV via Dax to Hendaye. From there, take a taxi just across the border to the Parador de Hondarribia. This four-star Parador is housed in a medieval castle overlooking the Bay of Txingudi.

Days 2-3

Travel by train from Irún via Madrid to Toledo. Toledo is an impressive medieval city set above the River Tagus. Stay for two nights at the beautiful four-star Parador, with stunning views of Toledo. The hotel is quietly located and has a swimming pool. A taxi is recommended for visiting the city, approximately €12 per journey.

Days 4-5

Travel via Madrid through the interior of Castile by AVE high-speed train to Córdoba, then continue by regional train to Jaén. Jaén is a beautiful city set among Spain's largest olive groves. The Parador near Jaén enjoys a unique location inside the medieval castle that towers high above the city. All rooms in this authentic medieval castle offer modern comforts. In fine weather, you can enjoy the views from the terraces. The hotel is only accessible by taxi, approximately €12 each way.

Days 6-7

Travel by direct Interregional train from Jaén to Cádiz. The train journey runs straight through Andalusia. The Parador of Cádiz enjoys a privileged, peaceful location by the Atlantic Ocean. This is a modern, bright Parador with a swimming pool, beautiful terraces and magnificent views of the old city and the ocean.

Day 8

Today you make a fast crossing of the Iberian Peninsula by high-speed train, changing in Seville. Overnight stay in the centre of Girona, for example at Hotel Gran Ultonia.

Day 9

Depart in the morning by high-speed TGV to Paris. Transfer by Metro to Gare du Nord and continue by Eurostar to London St Pancras.

Compared with the 9-day rail tour, this itinerary includes:

• 2 additional nights in Madrid, between Toledo and Jaén
• 1 additional night in Girona
