Day 1

Travel by Eurostar from London to Paris, then continue by TGV to Basel. Overnight in a 3-star hotel near Basel SBB station, for example Hotel Metropol.

Day 2

In the morning, travel from Basel to Zurich before boarding the EuroCity train through the Alps to Milan. Continue by Frecciarossa high-speed train to Rome, arriving in the early evening. Stay in a 3-star hotel within walking distance of Roma Termini station, for example Hotel Palladium Palace.

Day 3

Free day in Rome. Like Italy's other great cities, Rome is best explored on foot. Monuments from Roman, medieval and modern times are all within easy reach.

Day 4

In the morning, travel by Frecciarossa high-speed train to Florence in just 1½ hours. Firenze Santa Maria Novella station is located on the edge of the historic centre.

Stay in a 3-star hotel in the historic centre, for example Hotel Beatrice.

Day 5

Free day in Florence. Discover its many churches, museums, palaces and lively squares at your own pace.

Day 6

Travel by train to the Cinque Terre on the Ligurian coast. The five villages are connected by train and ferry. Centuries-old houses cling to the cliffs, surrounded by steep vineyards and olive groves.

Stay at Hotel Villa Argentina*** in Riomaggiore, within walking distance of the railway station and with views over the village, mountains and coastline. The hotel also has a large terrace.

Day 7

Free day in Riomaggiore. Wander through this picturesque village, enjoy a walk along the spectacular coastal paths, take a boat trip or visit the other villages of the Cinque Terre.

Day 8

Travel via La Spezia to Milan, then continue by EuroCity through the Swiss Alps to Basel.
