Day 1

Travel by Eurostar and TGV Lyria to Zurich, then continue via Chur on the UNESCO-listed Rhaetian Railway to Bergün (1,367 m). This authentic mountain village, where several Heidi films were made, is known for its historic Engadine-style houses and traditional farms. Visit the fascinating Albula Railway Museum, dedicated to the history and engineering of this remarkable railway. Stay for five nights in a cosy hotel close to the station.

Day 2

Your first rail-and-walking excursion takes you by Rhaetian Railway to Filisur. From the station, several well-marked walking trails lead to viewpoints overlooking the spectacular Landwasser Viaduct, Switzerland's most photographed railway bridge. Watch trains curve across the viaduct before disappearing directly into the tunnel carved into the cliff face. Walks range from 30 minutes to 1½ hours and can easily be combined.

Day 3

Today's excursion follows the famous Bahnlehrpfad railway trail. Take the train to Preda and walk back to Bergün along the historic Albula Railway, enjoying magnificent views of spiral tunnels, stone viaducts and passing trains. Information panels along the route explain the railway's engineering and indicate train passing times at the best viewpoints. Afterwards, there is time to visit the Albula Railway Museum.

Day 4

Travel on the Bernina Railway to Ospizio Bernina (2,253 m), the highest station on the line, surrounded by glaciers and the striking Lago Bianco. From here, enjoy an easy 1½-hour walk to Alp Grüm, offering magnificent views over the Poschiavo Valley before returning to Bergün by train.

Day 5

Enjoy a relaxing final day in Bergün. Take the complimentary chairlift to the Darlux hiking area and choose from several scenic walks with panoramic views of the surrounding Graubünden mountains.

Day 6

Return via Chur and Zurich to London, or your preferred railway station in Great Britain, by TGV Lyria and Eurostar.
